Radical change can trigger growth
by Nonong Noriega

THE DUST IS NEVER GOING to settle. As long as a better way of running our jobs gets uncovered, that will be pursued judiciously. It's the age of experimentation and intelligent risk taking. Once a business case merits foreseen benefits that will bear impact on process efficiency and cost reduction, the next step will be firming up implementation mechanics and the tall order of managing resistance. Now here's the hard hitting question: What is your threshold for radical change?

In my experience as a trainer of behavioral corporate disciplines, it is quite ironical that in many cases, the seasoned ones who have established a track record for exemplary performance can be the very people that oppose change. Deep probe reveals a grieving stage of disengagement from a body of fine work that has defined them through the years. The comfort zone that has caused their talents to thrive is being thwarted by more relevant value streams in the way business is done. This is where we'll need to strike the balance between honoring the past, from which the present state yielded its gains, and embracing the present that - truth be told - can mercilessly eclipse outdated practices to keep at par, if not above performance standards with industry counterparts.

How does one get comfortable with ambiguity? How do you guard momentum in the midst of disruptive transitions? One exasperated team player whines about reorganizations taking place almost every eight months in his group. Another would contest the move to integrate operations with shops doing parallel initiatives which necessitates the force ranking of talents and the weeding out of laggards. What if figures show how much we stand to save when we outsource certain functions?

The one who can ensure his staying power in the organization is the one who can withstand constant reinvention of competencies. The one with the nose for sniffing upcoming change is bound to find his life jacket, if it prompts him to level up his knowledge and proficiencies on tasks even outside his usual domain.

This is the now the new norm. While longevity of service is still honored, and I'll be the first to say that we have to revere those who have given the best years of their working lives to the company, it's best if we can marry longevity with versatility. Our educational attainment helped qualify us for the job. But the continuous enrichment and sharpening of the saw happens every time we grow beyond what the college diploma represents and for those who have served longer, beyond what your job descriptions mandate.

The merry-go-round need not be a merry-mix-up. Somewhere in the whirl and twirl, you will find yourself resilient and a trouper when the rules of the game change like the will of the wind.
